• Netflix beat its own projections by adding another 5.5 million subscribers in Q3
  – Netflix added 5.3 million streaming subscribers worldwide beating expectations of 4.4 million. It added 850,000 in the US and 4.45 million internationally. Reed Hastings has said Netflix could spend as much as $8 billion on content next year.
• Netflix has hired a new exec to tackle policy challenges in Europe and around the world
  – Netflix hired Monique Meche as its new vice president of global public policy. She formerly had similar roles at Amazon, Cisco and Intel. She’ll help Netflix deal with varying regulatory rules in the 190 countries Netflix operates in. That ranges from tax schemes, to programming requirements to net neutrality.
• Netflix Has Secret Weapon in Hollywood’s Multibillion-Dollar Arms Race

• Apple to Reboot Sci-Fi Series ‘Amazing Stories’ From Steven Spielberg
  – Apple signed a deal with Steven Spielberg to reboot Amazing Stories. It supposedly will be for 10 episodes. NBC which owns the Amazing Stories property is also involved.
• Plex launches its live TV service on Roku, with limited DVR functionality to start
  – Plex’s Live TV Service launched on Roku. The service which handles over the air broadcasts and DVR functions for you was already on most other platforms. It’s part of the $4.99 a month Plex Pass service.
• Hulu responds to user complaints with a grid guide for Live TV
  – Hulu launched a grid-like view for its live TV service. It’s available on the Web and will make its way to to the other apps as well.
• Roku’s new channel with free movies and TV goes live for all
  – Roku completed its rollout of a channel in the US that aggregates free TV and movies from accoss Roku channels plus some directly licensed from studios like Lionsgate, MGM, Paramount, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Warner Brothers. Ads run before content and users have to choose to add the app.

Hi Tom and Brian,

Long time listener and fan. The past two years I have been using cable for just local channels and Playstation Vue. I am about to close on my first house so because of the impending move I started to re evaluate how I cord cut.

First off I looked my antenna options because of the surrounding mountains. As of right now basic cable will be used but in a few weeks I will mount a large antenna off of the chimney of the house, hopefully it will work and I can cut basic out of my plan including a high $12 per month DTA cost.
Next I am looking to beef up my plex account, maybe to a lifetime plex pass. The service has been growing a lot in the last year and I have been impressed with the new additions. For services I am trying YouTube TV for CW live content. I am not sure if I will keep it due to the lack of DIY and HGTV and I do not want both YouTube TV and PS Vue.

I have been happy for the most part with PS Vue, but it has been several months since Sony and Viacom had their dispute. When I signed up I had all those channels and I felt like I was getting an amazing deal, now I feel like its an okay deal. I would pay another $5 with PS Vue if they added CW live, brought back Viacom channels, and added the History channel.
For the most part I have been very happy with my cord cutting experience.

As you know, Hulu recently dropped their price for new subscribers to only $5.99 per month for the first year. I had just signed up for Hulu about a few weeks ago to binge watch the Handmaid’s Tale, so I was pretty bummed to see them lower the price after I joined.

I decided to contact Hulu and see if I could get the new pricing even though I am now a current Hulu subscriber. I was pleased to find out that they would give me the lower rate, no questions asked!! This might not work for everyone, but you might want to pass this along to other Cordkillers as a new version of Brian’s Chicken challenge.

We’ve been internet only with phone (pacemaker monitoring & 911 health reasons) on TWC’s fastest speed since Cordkillers premiered, and have been eagerly awaiting G-Fiber’s arrival. Every truck sighting elicits excitement. Our home is 12 miles from town center nestled in a valley, which, though within city limits, would necessitate an expensive roof-mounted antenna to get broadcast TV.

Since we have been streaming (Google WiFi mesh) using Chromecasts and Rokus all this time, a speed quadrupling at two-thirds or less the cost is eagerly anticipated. If G-Fiber is not offering phone services [?] there are other ISP services we can use.

Hi guys, just wanted to let you know that as an old guy, I enjoyed Blade Runner 2049, but apparently it is a failure because only old guys like it. But on a related note, why do the studios fail to promote the sequels that seem to be so endemic these days by pushing the previous films in a series on the streaming platforms. Blade Runner is a great example since, though I find it hard to imagine, so many have never seen the first film. Another example was the Kingsmen sequel; I saw the previews for the Golden Circle several months ago, and had never heard of the original. I had to use my Netflix DVD subscription to get a chance to see it.

Without a TV or cable, I can’t see whether I would want to spend money on seeing either show, but without seeing them, I won’t spend the money to buy them on Amazon. Shouldn’t there be a better way? Or should I just wait till they show up on Prime or Netflix?

Hey Bri,

I signed up for Movie pass when they dropped the price to 10 dollars a month and loved it initially. I could use their “E-Ticket” feature at my local theater. Meaning I could pick my seat and buy the ticket from my house without ever using the MasterCard they shipped to me. It was great and I’ve seen more movies in the past 3 weeks then I did in the last 3 months.

Till… something change… They apparently lost the deal with Goodrich Theaters that allowed E-Tickets and now every theater in my area requires me to buy the ticket within 100 yards of the theater. The love is now gone… I like picking my seat and planning ahead of time and I’m willing to go to the theater less and get the best experience (picking my seat… etc) for the big movies than get some second class access to the smaller films while their in theaters.

So I cancelled my membership – which you can do directly from the app so no complaints there. But its just not worth it, even at 10 bucks a month. I mght start it back up again if they get the E-ticket feature back but until then… I’m out.

hey, I have no idea whether anyone else has been similarly affected, a google search turned up nothing, but while looking over my credit card bill I noticed that I had been charged 3 times in September for Filmstruck. Twice on the usual billing day, and then once again on the following day. I used the chat option from the Filmstruck help page and they immediately resolved the issue and refunded two of the charges. I don’t always go over my monthly transactions and very easily could have missed this, so I was thinking there’s probably a lot of other subscribers who (if this isn’t just something that just happened to me) might never know they’ d been overcharged.

CBS All Access and Big Brother

One aspect of CBS All Access I think is missed often in discussions is the inclusion of Big Brother Live feeds. For years CBS has been selling access to the feeds and have a faithful audience for them. One Year ago they ran a Special Season of Big Brother over the top which was only available on CBS All Access. So for those customers everything else is Value add.

Still debating on if its worth it to watch the New Star Trek.

  – Roku just announced updates to five of its streaming devices. Roku’s $50 streaming stick gets a 50% faster processor and support for voice control. The $70 Roku Streaming Stick Plus has 4K and better wifi range with the wireless module built into the cable. The $30 Roku Express and $40 Roku Express Plus get faster processors and the Express Plus keeps its composite ports. The Roku Ultra isn’t being changed but the price did drop from $130 to $100. Roku OS 8 is also out for all supported boxes. It can integrate OTA programming and adds single sign-on.

• Amazon’s new Fire TV supports picture-in-picture and recording
  – Amazon’s new $70 dongle with 4k, HDR and Dolby Atmos also has a couple other cool features. Because Fire TV OS 6 is based on Android Nougat, it can do picture-in-picture video. It also has a framework to allow pause, rewind and recording of video for apps that support it. The device has 8 GB of storage. The new Fire TV ships Octobner 25. Fire TV OS 6 will not be available for older Fire TV models.
• Disney releases DisneyNow, a new app that combines live TV, on-demand, games and music
  – Disney released a new combined app called Disney Now.,. that combines Disney Channel, Disney XD Disney Junior and Radio Disney into one app. This is similar to Fox Now which combines multiple networks like Fox, FX and NetGeo in one app. The app has settings to personalize it for the kids (or adults) using it. Some content is there for free but most will require the user to authenticate through a third-party service like YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, or Hulu.
• Amazon Is Developing a Bonanza of Genre Titles: Ringworld, Snow Crash, and Lazarus
  – Amazon has put the following scifi titles into development for TV shows. Ringworld by Larry Niven, Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, Lazarus by Greg Rucka. Rucka will be adapting the graphic novel himself.
• Nearly two million people watched NFL livestream on Amazon.com
  – Amazon’s stream of Thursday Night Football launched last week and about 1.9 million people watched. Twitter’s first stream of Thursday Night Football last year got 2.3 million streams. However people watched longer on Amazon with the average audience for any 30 seconds was 372,000 compared to Twitter’s 243,000.
• Canada unveils vision for the arts; Netflix makes investment
  – Canada announced a deal where Netflix will spend C$500 million to create programming in Canada and establish a permanent production presence there. The announcement was part of a review done by Canadian Heritage Minister Melanie Joly. YouTube recently started a channel for Canadian content.

I was listening to you talk about the new Trek when I had the following thoughts: I enjoy Cordkillers. I enjoy it enough that I give money through Patreon for content I could get for free. I also enjoy Star Trek. I view CBS All Access as a racket though. I won’t be giving money to their success and will instead wait for Trek on some other platform. On the one hand I pay for free content and on the other hand I want paid content for free. I can’t explain it. Go figure. Anyhow, you guys are worth the dough. Keep up the good work.

I couldn’t believe what I heard today. After listening to my favorite podcast my app automatically starting playing my 3rd favorite. While putting in a hard day’s work looking busy and trying not to get caught playing on my phone. It happened. I thought somehow Trump invaded my air waves but It didn’t sound like the person was holding his hand in the air when he talked. How could you hate the big bang theory. It’s my favorite show of all time. So I decided I will donate $1 an episode but you must confess your love for the show.

Dear Tom and Brian,

I have long felt 2 things are true about CBS:
They are the home of many of my favorite shows
They are very stingy about rebroadcast rights for their shows, to the point of being greedy. Examples:
I was a fan of The Mentalist but I had to watch it live because it wasn’t available On Demand on our cable system like most other shows.
Their new show, Seal Team, is not listed in my cable company’s On Demand library; I guess if you don’t catch it live you have to watch it on CBS All Access.
As Tom has said, they often only allow a few episodes of a season to be available On Demand at any given time.
Contrast that with these examples from NBC:
· The entire first season of This is Us is available On Demand.
· All 8 seasons of Will and Grace appear to be available on my cable system’s On Demand library.
· You’d think they actually want to give people the opportunity to get caught up on these shows if they missed them when they first aired!

I feel like CBS believes they have such great and popular content that people will put up with their shenanigans and pay whatever they ask in order to watch it. I guess it remains to be seen whether this is true.

I do intend to sign up for CBS All Access. I tried it before and didn’t have very good luck with it. I intend to quit the subscription as soon as the Star Trek show is over.

Did you know they’re going to have a break starting November 5, restarting sometime in January? I bet they’ll get a lot of people cancelling in between . . .

I am considering CBS all access. I watched Star Trek Discovery and liked it enough to start the consideration. I am going away for a large part of December and can foresee some DVR shortages creeping up and CBS All Access could help, that is if I can watch the past five episodes or more of some of there current shows. I did some searching to see if I could find a chart of what shows have Full access and which have partial access, like your Supergirl example. Do you know of any such chart or site with information like that.

  – Hulu announced a deal to carry the CW on its live TV service. Hulu Live now has all five major english-language US broadcasters. It will arrive in select markets first with other affiliates joining over time.

• The Tick’s Creators Split Up the New Season to Curb Binge Watching
  – The Tick arrived on Amazon Friday but only half the season. Creator Ben Edlund told CinemaBlend that they broke up the season in two on purpose. Edlund said The Binge Watching [sic] issue is… I see it as it’s a perfect dive from a high board, and there’s no splash. We’re all sort of veterans of the opposite of that. Fan energy wants to have a culture to express itself in. So if you split a season, and give a gap in-between, you get anticipation, you get people are able [to] talk about what happened.”
• Adam Scott Suspects His Stepson Is Satan’s Son in the Trailer for Little Evil
  – Eli Craig who made Tucker and Dale vs. Evil parodying the cabin the woods horror genre has a movie called Little Evil that parodies the possessed child genre. Little Evil stars Adam Scott and Evangeline Lilly and premieres September 1.
• Stranger Things Will Be Back For Season 3, But Probably End After Season 4
  – Ross Duffer told Vulture that he and his brother are thinking Stranger Things will wrap up in four seasons. Netflix has renewed the series for a third season. The second season arrives October 27th.
• Netflix snags ‘Def Comedy Jam’ 25th anniversary special
  – Netflix will stream Russel Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam 25th anniversary special this autumn. The lineup will include Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Tracy Morgan and Katt Williams. A reboot of the series is also coming to HBO in November called All Def Comedy.
• Get Your First Look at Black Mirror’s Freaky Fourth Season Right Now

  – An app for Vudu has arrived for Apple TV. You can’t make purchases from it but you can access your library and any ad-supported free streaming videos.
• ESPN will stream big-name boxing matches under a new deal
  – ESPN has reached a multi-year agreement to air and stream Top Rank boxing matches in the US and Canada. That would include ESPN’s forthcoming streaming-only service.
• Netflix Is Now Selling its Own Weed Strains
  – Variety reports that Netflix has put its name on some boutique strains of legal marijuana for sale this past weekend at a pop-up shop inside the Alternative Herbal Health Services dispensary in West Hollywood. The move is in promotion of Disjointed which premiered on Netflix Friday.
• HBO NOW’s app has pulled in $19 million since the “Game of Thrones” premiere
  – App Annie estimates that the iOS and Android version of the HBO Now app have generated $19 million of revenue in the US since the premiere of Game of Thrones. For the week of August 20th it was the top grossing app on any mobile platform passing Pandora and Netflix.
• Facebook and Twitter Will Stream College Football This Season
  – Facebook and Twitter have reached an agreement with Stadium to stream college football games. Facebook will have 15 games from Conference USA and Mountain West. Twitter has not announced it’s slate but will show Alabama A&M against Alabama-Birmingham.

So I used Movie Pass back when it was $45-$50 a month for those in the LA area and I enjoyed it for the time I had it, got lots of bonus reward points from theaters however it has changed since then for the better. Back then there was no online ordering with it, you had to be at the theater to activate the account to make a purchase so it was a gas cost. It also included a 6 month cool down period if you cancelled. (So you can’ just use it for winter blockbuster season and then start up at the next summer blockbuster season) At the $10 a month I don’t see a reason to let it lapse though. Data signal can be an issue, so finding out what theaters have dead zones by the box office and activating the card in the parking lot is important however with online ordering I see this going to be a lesser issue. If you have a theater nearby with a rewards program it is a MUST HAVE. If you go to 1 movie a month it is a huge discount. If you go to two movies every 3 months (based on my local market( it’s still a deal.

I signed up for the service the day after the price change. I was very excited about the service seeing how I typically see at least one movie a month. The first few days of the service the app was not working very well due to the influx of new users. I was told to buy a ticket and send them the receipt and they will refund the price, which I was fine with.

Now a week later I have found that the app is working pretty well and it is very convenient to just open the app, select my theater, reserve the seat, and have my ticket ready at the box office (this does only work if MP has a deal with that specific theater to do e-tickets). I also found that my movie going experience was much more enjoyable. You feel like such a bad ass just opening your phone and a few minutes later having reserved a seat and just walking in the theater. On top of that I have went to see movies that I would have never seen in theaters and if I did I would have been upset knowing that I spend $10-$12, but instead I can just relax and enjoy a movie I more than likely wouldn’t have every paid to see, and I don’t feel bad throwing the theater a couple bucks for a snack or drink.

Even if the current pricing only lasts 12-18 months I think it will be worth it in the long run and even give movie chains time to consider their own subscription service down the road.

Primary Target

• The Walt Disney Company to Acquire Majority Ownership of BAMTech
  – Disney announced it is buying a majority stake in BAMTech, the streaming-video company founded by Major League Baseball that powers services like the NHL, MLB, and HBO now. Disney also announced it plans to launch an ESPN-branded streaming service in early 2018, with broadcasts not aired on other ESPN channels, and a new Disney and Pixar streaming service in 2019. Disney will end its agreement with Netflix for Disney and Pixar movies at the end of 2018, though Netflix is still negotiating to renew a deal for Marvel and Lucasfilm content.

  – Shonda Rhimes’ production company Shondaland signed a multi-year deal to produce new content for Netflix. Rhimes told the Wall Street Journal, “I’m thrilled by the idea of a world where I’m not caught in the necessary grind of network television.”
• David Letterman is joining forces with Netflix for a new show
  – David Letterman has agreed to host 6 episodes of a talk show for Netflix to arrive in 2018. Each episode would be an hour long with a longform interview with one guest as well as segments shot outside the studio. In a statement Letterman said, “Here’s what I have learned, if you retire to spend more time with your family, check with your family first. Thanks for watching, drive safely.”
• Netflix lands the Coen Brothers’ Western TV series
  – The Coen Brothers will produce, write and direct their first television show called “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs” for Netflix. It will be a western anthology with six stories centered around Scruggs. The cast includes Tim Blake Nelson as Buster Scruggs, as well as Ryne Daley, James Franco, Zoe Kazan.
• Netflix snags an Alan Arkin, Michael Douglas comedy series
  – Netflix announced a project called The Kominsky Method starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin. The series will be written and produced by Big Bang Theory co-creator Chuck Lorre. Chuck Lorre’s series Disjointed starring Kathy Bates premieres August 25th.

How to Watch

• Facebook launches Watch tab of original video shows
  – Facebook is rolling out a new version of its video section, renamed Watch, to select users in the US. Some videos are episodic and broken down into categories like “Most Talked About” or “What’s Making People Laugh”. Users can subscribe to updates from favorite shows, chat with other viewers while watching, and connect with creators through Groups. Facebook has funded some of the shows, but anyone can create one and get 55% of the revenue generated. Shows come from places like Tastemade, Major League Baseball, Mike Rowe, Billboard Magazine, National Geographic and more.
• Seeso shutting down
  – NBC will shut down its Seeso comedy streaming service later this year. The service launched in January 2016, but laid off staff in June. Seeso originals “HarmonQuest,” “My Brother, My Brother and Me,” “Hidden America With Jonah Ray,” and “The Cyanide and Happiness Show” will move to the VRV streaming service.

What to Watch

• Netflix renewed GLOW for a second season, no word on when it will arrive.
• Netflix takes on JFK in ‘The Crown’ season two December 8th
  – The Crown returns to Netflix December 8. It will be the last season with Claire Foy playing Queen Elizabeth II. Michael C. Hall and Jodi Balfour will play John F. Kennedy and wife Jackie.
• Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff Silver and Black will hit theaters in 2019
  – Sony announced that Silver and Black, a Spider-man cinematic universe film featuring Black Cat and Silver Sable will arrive February 8th, 2019. Venom arrives October 5th, 2018.
• Comedians Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson are bringing their hit podcast 2 Dope Queens to HBO as four one-hour comedy specials in 2018.

• Pandora names Sling TV founding CEO Roger Lynch as new CEO and president
  – Pandora announced Sling TV founder Roger Lynch will become the new Pandora CEO. Former head of Sony Pictures, Michael Lynton also joined the Pandora board. Pandora founder Tim Westegren told the Verge in March that video was on Pandora’s list.
• Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman signs deal to develop TV for Amazon
  – Robert Kirkman’s Skybound has a new deal to create TV projects for Amazon Prime Video. Kirkman has Walking Dead on AMC, has Outcast on Cinemax and film version of Invincible headed to Universal, so we’re not sure yet what Kirkman might bring to Amazon.
• Michael Sheen, David Tennant to Star in Neil Gaiman’s ‘Good Omens’ at Amazon
  – Variety reports Michael Sheen and David Tennant have been cast in the lead roles for an Amazon/BBC co-produced 6-episode series based on the book Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. It will premier first on Amazon Prim then on BBC and be distributed by the BBC in all markets where Amazon does not offer service.
• Amazon is shutting down its DVD by mail service LoveFilm on October 31st. Subscribers will get a discount on an Amazon Fire TV stick.
• The latest no-frills Roku TVs start at $250
  – Roku and RCA announced a new lineup of Roku-enabled HDTVS. A 32-inch model costs $249.99, a 43-inch model is $379.99, and the top-end 50-inch model is $499, available now.
• Vizio added the Google Play Movies & TV app to its VIA+ and D-series Smart TVs. It recently added apps like Netflix and Amazon.

What do you think will happen with Star Trek Discovery if the first episode is a huge hit on CBS television, but the subsequent streaming only episodes are a bomb? Does it move to CBS television? Will they let if fail as a streaming only show? If they move it to television, what will this do for future streaming only series? Will people buy in to CBS All Access if they think there is a chance that streaming only shows will eventually show up on CBS television for free?

Morning Tom and Brian,

Last show, Mickey Neumann made a great point I wish would have moved into discussion. His comment was following the conversation of how CBS moves it’s properties around like pawns — Mickey said he didn’t feel “it respects the creator of the art”.

Particularly from Brian, who’s produced shows (and even reneged his cable cutting tacit agreement so he could watch himself on cable tv)… and no longer controls the distribution of them. I’ve heard Brian mention in passing he doesn’t know where the shows are or how to get them.. so it sounds like he’s just let go. I’d love to hear more about that end of the deal process to letting go of your art

Is there a way to request a company to start streaming some of their back catalog? HBO GO/HBO Now does not have some major pieces of their library:

The Tom Hanks produced From the Earth to the Moon mini series…
The Golden Globe winning Don King: Only in America movie…
The classic David Mamet directed magic special Ricky Jay and his 52 Assistants…
And all of the past Young Comedian Specials…

Is it because these things were all filmed and produced for 4×3 television screens that they remain mothballed and not available to stream?
