was listening to the Autopilot Show featuring the pilot for one of my favorite television shows Emergency as i type this i am hearing Scott talk about my favorite show THIRD WATCH. which did an awesome job during the 9-11-2001 incorporating that into their storyline. ABC did a show called CODE RED which also took place in Los Angeles. I hope ya’ll are planning to do Millenium as well as the LONEGUNMAN.

Hey Tom what happened to Triangulation?

  5. Tom
    July 8, 2012 at 2:09 pm

I had to cut down the number of things I do and focus. Triangulation was really fun, but Leo certainly doesn’t need me to make a great show. It was a hard decision, believe me, but I can watch and enjoy!

Will there be no more Tech News Today now that Tom is moving to LA in January? (Tom’s move just mentioned at the beginning of TNT episode #624.)

No, I’ll just be doing it in LA while the rest of the folks are in Petaluma.

I like Darren Kitchen on TNT, but could somebody PLEASE tell him to face the camera and talk. All we ever see is his profile, I wonder what he looks like face on. I feel like I’m eavesdropping
on a conversation instead of being talked to. Love your show, thanks.

Tom, I just found out about AutoPilot. I always thought a good show like this could be made. I wanted to call it ” First and Last”, were you would show the pilot and then the final show, and compare and contrast the episodes. Keep up thr good work.

Oh No, no more Frame Rate? Say it isn’t true. Let us know if you put out a replacement show.
Frame Rate and TNT were the last of the TechTV shows that made my cut. Will most likely un-subscribe now.

During your recent Merritt Brainstorm on Google Hangouts, one idea that came up was to do a show or segment about cheaper technology alternatives. I recently went down this road, writing an ebook called The Best Android Tablets under $100 (and more) that I published on Kindle. I thought I’d share my experiences with you, so you could make a more informed decision about cheap technologies.

So it all started last year. I bought two small Emerson tablets for my kids, and Double Power tablet for my mother. I blogged about my experiences setting both tablets. Basically, the Emerson tablets worked out fine, and the DoPo was a disaster.

The response to my blog posts was surprising. Many people left comments, asking questions or offering advice. After writing online for years, the response from strangers was amazing.

Inspired by this, I decided to write the book. I applied my knowledge to all the cheap android devices out there, and recommended the best ones. None of the devices were perfect, but I at least wanted to steer people in the right direction if all they could afford was an $80 tablet and they needed to get something.

The book got a couple of nice Amazon reviews, and I sell one or two copies a month. I still have my day job, obviously, but it’s been nice to help out people like me on a tight budget.

So, if you were to do a show about low cost tech solutions, here are the lessons I’d want you to keep in mind before making a final decision:

    1. People looking for cheap solutions are short on cash. Therefore, they’re not a great demographic for advertisers.

    2. You will feel good helping others with inexpensive tech solutions.

    3. Talking cheap tech will differentiate you from the crowd.

Maybe with your name recognition, you can take coverage of cheap android devices and other inexpensive tech solutions to new heights that I was unable to reach. I would not spend too much time on it, as you have to make a living, but I would be happy if you looked into it and added it to your news coverage as a segment.

    Best of luck,

    Tony Vahl

I can’t seem to get my RSS reader to find the video feed for your news show. I use a Windows 8.1 Media Center App that allows me to watch the video podcast on the TV. When I go to your RSS feed list all I can get is the mp3 version. Any help?

I would like to subscribe to your feeds in video on Doggcatcher. I can’t figure out how to do it?? What is a good place for the rss feeds? I use Doggcatcher to download on WiFi so I don’t eat up my data.

Which feeds are you having problems with?

  29. Jason LeBouef
    January 11, 2014 at 5:29 am

Although I would not call myself a RSS guru, I can not seem to find existing video links (besides embedded urls) when I check out the RSS feed:

If I was to make a guess, I would have to gather existing RSS feeds that are hosting video links and add them to Dogcatcher individually?

Normally, I am a Listen! user but Dogcatcher seems pretty robust.

If anyone has a better answer id like to know . But for right now Tom does not have DTNS going as a video RSS feed. his audio links all work . There is also a “all of toms” audio feed that works great and behind the scenes video of DTNS are on his youtube channel 30 mins after the show
    DTNS link

    Current Geek link

    All the tom

@MarkFrost: are you having trouble finding the RSS links, or where to put them in Doggcatcher?

  32. Answer To Mark Frost
    January 11, 2014 at 12:29 pm

I’ll show you the easiest way to add Tom’s shows as Video in Doggcatcher. The fastest method depends a bit on the show:

    – Sword & Laser: wait until Video Season 2 starts.

    – Daily Tech News Show: No podcast video release exists yet, so we’ll use the youtube recording. Tap the + icon in the top right corner. Select „Feed RSS URL“. Enter „“ into the RSS URL field. Tap OK.

    – Current Geek: Is a audio-only release. You can manually track down the video of Scott’s camera during the recording in the mess of twitch archives, but the audio version is much more convenient and arguably better. Tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „Current Geek“ as search term. Choose the top left result (has „Current Geek 01: The English Breakfast“ as episode for example), tap Subscribe.

    – Cordkillers: Tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „Cordkillers“ as search term. Choose the top left result (Cordkillers Video Podcast), tap Subscribe.

    – FSL Tonight: Has no video version. For audio, tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „“FSL Tonight““ (note: with quotation marks) as search term. Choose the top left result (FSL Tonight), tap Subscribe.

    – It’s a Thing: Has no video version. For audio, tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „It’s a thing“ as search term. Choose the result that’s called „It’s a Thing“, near the top of your screen. Tap Subscribe.

    – Autopilot: Has no video version. For audio, tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „AutoPilot“ as search term. Choose the result that’s called „AutoPilot!“, near the top of your screen. Tap Subscribe.

    – East Meets West: Has no video version. For audio, tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „“East Meets West““ (note: with quotation marks) as search term. Choose the top left result (FSL Tonight), tap Subscribe.

    – The Morning Stream: Is a audio-only release. You can manually track down the video of Scott’s or Brian’s camera during the recording in the mess of twitch archives, but the audio version is much more convenient and arguably better. Tap the + icon in the top right corner of Doggcatcher. Select „Search Feeds“. Enter „Morning Stream as search term. Choose the top left result (The Morning Stream), tap Subscribe. Make sure to only listen to the Wednesday episodes if you just want Tom.

    – Talk Tech: this KFWB appearance is not available on demand.

I hope you are now able to enjoy as much content as you’d like to.

Note: the above Doggcatcher subscription for Daily Tech News Show doesn’t download videos, it just links to the youtube app when there is a new episode. If you want that show as offline videos, you need to subscribe to with your google account and enable prefetching in the android app settings.

Hi Tom, I’m loving DTNS. Is there a live feed? You should have Veronica on sometime. Perhaps Molly. Best of luck with all you do.

  37. January 17, 2014 at 6:11 pm

Ok, I will not make a negative comment to the old thing you did but I will say that I am so happy to have you on my podcast list again! I had to remove all of the other shows I was listening to because of my personal feelings on the “chief in charge” but my ride home from NYC to Hartford CT is now enlightening again! My only wish is that your show was a bit longer, its a long ride home!
    Thanks Tom.

Hi Tom, Do you have a list of your favorite podcasts that you subscribe to?
I thought in the past I had seen such a list, but I may be wrong.
I am also curious about your favorite Android apps, or recommended apps that everyone should use.
    Take care,

  44. Tom
    May 10, 2015 at 12:52 pm

I don’t and it changes but these days I subscribe to The Economist All Audio feed, Marshall McLuhan Variety Hour, The Angry Chicken, The Best Podcast in Baseball, Common Sense, Hardcore History, The Instance, Jawbone Radio, Le rendez-vous Tech, Byte, NASACast, The Phileas Club, The Shakespeare Sound, Tangential Convergence, Tell It Anyway, We Have Concerns.

AS for Android apps, they’re pretty much the same across all platforms for me and pretty boring. Twitter, Instagram, Feedly etc…
