Tech News Today with Tom MerrittI’m happy to announce that my new show, Tech News Today, on Leo Laporte’s TWiT network will debut on June 1. I’ll record it live at 5:30 Eastern/2:30 Pacific every day Mon-Fri (just in time for evening drive time on the east coast).

Here’s a few other things to know about the show:
- I’ll have a co-host which will be in rotation for now. Probably a lot of Leo at first, but more to come on this!
- TNT will be put out as an audio podcast by 5:30 pacific, with video a few hours later.
- People will be able to watch it live by going to http://live.twit.tv, Justin.tv, or Ustream. They can listen to it live on http://live.twit.tv, at http://twit.am or in the iTunes radio listings. They can listen or watch live from the TWiT iPhone app or the TWiTpad app, and also in the ustream apps on the iPhone OS and Android OS. Additionally, if they go to Live.twit.tv on their iPhone/iPad, they can watch live using 3G – no wi-fi needed.
-The show will be around 30-40 minutes.
- You can send email to [email protected], which is already set up.

Nice! Will this be the only show you’ll be doing?

  2. Sean Palladino on May 14, 2010 at 2:50 pm

Congrats, Tom! You are an inspiration to all geeky journalists in the world. I have subscribed to all of your podcasts (which is a LOT), but Buzz Out Loud will always be my favorite. Have a great time with Leo Laporte as your boss. :P

  3. Nerdylation on May 14, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Tom leaves CNet heads towards TWiT and boom goes the dynomite

  4. Matt B on May 14, 2010 at 2:57 pm

    Hey Tom,

What’s the average timing going to be on this show?

Will it be a short form podcast <10 mins or a longer form ?

  5. Ben R on May 14, 2010 at 3:13 pm

Congrats on the new gaff – looking forward to hearing it. I am huge Leo fan.
Will miss you on BoL – how you could tear yourself away from the fabulous Molly is a mystery to me, but you have found a good new home.

  6. kurros on May 14, 2010 at 3:16 pm

You’re Nitrozac portrait turned out pretty good

  7. Gary on May 14, 2010 at 3:21 pm

A daily news podcast… alright Tom, I’ll give you a provisional slot in my podcast rotation. :)

    Looking forward to it!

  8. Matt Johnson on May 14, 2010 at 3:22 pm

Well, I would have loved it to be a little earlier in the day so I could download the audio to my iPhone for the drive home like I do BOL…but I suppose this will cover my drive to work the next morning.

Congrats Tom. I will miss you on CNet but am looking forward to your contributions at TWiT.

  9. Chris on May 14, 2010 at 3:27 pm

Congratulations on the move, Tom! I will now be adding TNT to my long list of CNET and Revision3 podcasts. Now time to look more into what TWiT has to offer.

  10. Charlene on May 14, 2010 at 3:32 pm

Please twitter when the RSS feed is up and running.

  11. Jay on May 14, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Tom – TNT sounds good, i bet it was you that came up with that name, i hope you can manage to conjure up a similar sort of vibe you did at BOL over the years. I’m going to miss your BOL so much, but I’m hoping that TNT is going to be the same thing, but no Rafe or Molly! what a shame. Good luck mate

    - -

Matt B – read the penulTOMate point above for show timings!

  12. Thomas on May 14, 2010 at 3:55 pm

“-The show will be around 30-40 minutes.”

So, what you’re saying is that TNT will be a tech show of indeterminate length?

  13. TM Fan on May 14, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Wait, what? No more TM in CNET?
Oh well, another website to visit every single day.

  14. Mollie Nothnagel on May 14, 2010 at 4:02 pm

Tom, congratulations on the new gig. I’m a fan of the content on TWiT.tv and can’t wait to hear the new show. You will be missed on CNET, but I’m glad to still have your voice and insights at my fingertips each day.

By the way, what’s it like seeing yourself on a TWiT.tv album cover?

  15. citizenplain on May 14, 2010 at 4:03 pm

    Tom + TWiT * Leo / New Show = win^2

Really excited to know that I’ll be able to watch your new show live.
Living in CST I usually catch everything the following day.

  16. Jason on May 14, 2010 at 4:12 pm

So, you will have a couple of hours after listening to BOL to provide updates on their stories. Awesome! LOL. Been listening to you and BOL for a couple of years now. I’m staying with Molly and Rafe on BOL but I’m going to start listening to TNT too.

  17. SoCalMedic on May 14, 2010 at 4:15 pm

Can’t wait to start listening. I listened live today to the BOL send off and you will be missed greatly, but I’m glad that your moving on. Good Luck!

  18. David C on May 14, 2010 at 4:19 pm

Too bad about the podcast time – I love hearing today’s news the day it happens, and midnight means I’ll get it the day after. I’ll still listen, but this dampens my excitement. I’m not in a location where I can stream.

  19. skinner on May 14, 2010 at 4:33 pm

    Very excited!

  20. Nelson on May 14, 2010 at 4:39 pm

Congratulations Tom I’m your fan #1
    no matter where you go

  21. MakerMan on May 14, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Tom, BOL will not be the same without… I hope that you can have more than one co-host (2 would be ideal) so that the banter that you are so awesome at will come about…

  22. Dustin Sherrill on May 14, 2010 at 5:39 pm

Can’t wait. I am already looking for an RSS feed to load into my phone.

  23. Mike on May 14, 2010 at 5:44 pm

Congrats! Anxiously looking forward to it.

  24. Anonymous on May 14, 2010 at 6:28 pm

I look forward to the show. It would be nicer to have the show be released earlier in the day, so that I can listen to it in the evening, like I listen to BOL, but I’ll survive. Hope you get some awesome co-hosts though. Leo is good, but he’s too much of an Apple fanboy and kind of ignorant about open source and a lot of non-Apple geeky stuff.

  25. Vincent on May 14, 2010 at 6:31 pm

Great times I’ve had listening to you on BOL Tom! You always had a way of balancing conversations and making good scientifically sound comments. ;) With only Rafe and Molly left as main hosts, after 4 years, I’m switching shows to TWiT, I need that balance of you in between them. So, better make TWiT a good one! :) All the luck

  26. Chip on May 14, 2010 at 6:39 pm

I love the time. My wife and I are huge BOL fans and usually watch it when we get home from work. TNT may be our new show to listen to while making dinner. But, we’ll still watch BOL also! We’ll be well informed nerds.

    See you at Dragon*Con,

    chip

  27. Steve on May 14, 2010 at 6:42 pm

Show sounds good, but the time is terrible for the east coast. Cant watch or listen live and by the time the podcast is out, its too late.

  28. SaharaChild on May 14, 2010 at 6:58 pm

Good luck Tom my man !

  29. Sean Kheraj on May 14, 2010 at 7:02 pm

This is great news. I’m all set to subscribe. Congratulations, Tom.

  30. Jogger30 on May 14, 2010 at 7:46 pm

    Hey Tom,
All the best …thanks for the great times on CNET. Looking forward to a new show with you and the “rotaing” hosts. Will you have live chat withe the show?

  31. Mugglelover on May 14, 2010 at 7:51 pm

    Congratulations,
I appreciate your balance and intellect, I will miss you on cnet, it will not be the same without you. I might just be done with BOL…and take this up as my daily tech dish. Though it seems like an odd move from the outside with all that corporate backing Cnet seems on fire..
    Best of luck,
    A supportive fan!

  32. Melissa on May 14, 2010 at 8:19 pm

I’m looking forward to the new show, tech news wouldn’t be the same without your take on it. I hope you’ll will bring the lively debate that you brought to BOL, even if you have to debate yourself. ;)

  33. andrews on May 14, 2010 at 9:09 pm

I will miss you Tom from cnet. i will miss your top 5s and least 5s. Good luck.

  34. Ran on May 15, 2010 at 12:51 am

Can’t wait, as it is CNET and TWIT are my only must listen daily shows, having you on twit only makes it better.

  35. Peter on May 15, 2010 at 1:02 am

Awesome. That’s all I gots to say.

  36. Grrbrr on May 15, 2010 at 3:26 am

I’m so sad that the show wasn’t called “This week in today”

  37. Jonathan Strickland on May 15, 2010 at 6:23 am

If you’re ever strapped for a co-host and your top 25 folks can’t help out, let me know. We’ve smoothed out the process a little. I can’t wait to hear the show! Congratulations once again.

  38. Theodat on May 15, 2010 at 9:20 am

Gonna listen everyday on my Iphone app…I get off work at 530P everyday…

  39. Cory Roush on May 15, 2010 at 10:00 am

@Grrbrr: Jason Calacanis probably already took that idea!

Congratulations, Tom, and good luck on the new show! I’ll be a listener from day one, for sure.

  40. A. Holder on May 15, 2010 at 10:15 am

As soon as the Podcast feed goes live, could you possible tweet about it or post to your fan page? I would really like to keep up with your new show.

Thanks, and congratulations again on joining TWIT.

  41. Tyler on May 15, 2010 at 9:25 pm

I really am not a fan of TWiT, I’ve tried listening to a few shows, but it seems to be more rambling (at least, the few episodes I’ve listened to) then actual content.

Having said that, all your podcasts seem to be fantastic, and I cannot wait to see what you have in store for TnT. I’ll miss you on BOL, but I think Rafe, Molly & Jason will do well (but I would have loved for Brian Cooley to have become the new co host – he’s NEVER on anymore).

Anyways, congratulations, good luck & all the best.

  42. Dave Taylor on May 15, 2010 at 10:06 pm

Thank goodness that you’re doing a daily show. As a Mac user, I
really don’t feel welcome at BOL anymore. I look forward to your fair and well
reasoned take on news from all sectors of the tech world Tom.

  43. Jason on May 15, 2010 at 10:55 pm

Can’t wait Tom Thanks for keeping us in the loop.

  44. Mister PC on May 16, 2010 at 12:23 am

The presence of your absence will be felt at CNET and BOL in particular – but this too shall pass!

Looking forward to hearing and watching you carve out a new space for yourself. Also thinking you will need a third belly button on that show. Need some random chaos in there Merritt…IMHO.

Will be in the chat room for the first show – for SURE. All the best TM.

  45. Jeff on May 16, 2010 at 10:00 am

Be sure to somehow let everyone know when you have podcasts. BOL is the reason I started listening to any podcasts. Good luck.

  46. Jude on May 16, 2010 at 10:13 am

“I can listen using Ustream on my android device.” Anybody able to get that to work? I haven’t been successful in the past…

    Congratulations Tom!

  47. Jim on May 16, 2010 at 10:38 am

Tom, I like that you didn’t use the old, tired, shopworn TwitNetwork naming scheme of This Week In (something or other). I like the TNT branding, and I know that you will be a breath of fresh air, so in keeping with that may I suggest that you use the intervening time to construct a new studio set in some corner of the twit-arena for your show, instead of just occupying the blue ball like the rest of the crowd. There should be no reason why there can’t be more than one show running at a time, instead of running them all sequentially, with hosts backed up around the block waiting their turn at the microphone.

You are a heavy hitter talent, and I think it was a gutsy move on your part to leave, so go big. I hope you achieve the professional satisfaction you desire.

  48. Bogdan on May 16, 2010 at 1:35 pm

I’m watching CNETTV for about 3 years. I always thought that you made CNETTV the best and it is nothing without you. Let’s see what will happen next. I will watch TNT, but I hope i will see you on BOL from time to time.

    Bogdan from Romania.

  49. Yello-Ant on May 16, 2010 at 4:06 pm

I really impressed, what they can offer to you so you are leave CNET. Dunno what the reason, but i wish you good luck in this Tom, you always keep connection with the community. Thanks what your are doing.

  50. Beelissa on May 16, 2010 at 5:42 pm

So, after viewing the picture of Tom’s abandoned office at CNET, I went to TWIT.TV to see when I can get my Tom Merritt fix again. Glad to hear about this show. I just have one question. Why doesn’t it start tomorrow?
