Starting May 14th I’ll be doing a whole lot of different things.

On that day I’ll step down as a full-time employee of CNET. I’ve been there almost 6 years. They were my lifeboat after TechTV sunk and I’ve met and worked with some awesome people there.

But I’m burying the lede. Starting June 1 I’ll be joining Leo Laporte’s TWiT network as a daily host. Stay tuned to TWiT for more details on what I’ll be doing there.

As for CNET, I’m still working out the details of what I can continue to do there. Maybe Top 5, and maybe some regular appearances on BOL.

Overall I’m incredibly excited. This will allow me to keep doing some of the things I love for CNET, while opening the door to a whole lot of creative flexibility and control over my own content.

So what kind of content do you want to see on TWiT? I’ll have some 20 hours or so to fill, so ideas are more than welcomed!

Thanks again to CNET for being pretty cool through this process and a huge thanks to Leo for having the confidence in me to give me this opportunity!

And thanks to all the folks who watch and listen to what I’ve done over the years. Because if you hadn’t done that, I wouldn’t be able to do any of this.

Update: For perfectly understandable reasons, CNET has declined to keep me on part-time to do any shows. But I do have pitches out at a couple other outlets. Plus they’re paying for the drinks on my last day, so I’ll make sure to make them feel it then.

Congratulations on moving with Mr. Laporte.
I am from Mexico, how about doing a North Meets South Podcast =)
Hope this means you will be a regular with SHWOOD and JURY on the NSFW show…
You will be missed in BOL, but fortunately, not in the Podcastsphere? Podosphere?

  2. Vikin on April 16, 2010 at 7:00 pm

I hope you can change Twit for the better – I stopped listening to them a ling time ago. To US-centric. To much bashing of Europe. And above all – to much self-righteous gloating about being “the leader and inventors of a new paradigm”, or similar. In short: a very tiring attitude problem.

  3. Nocurefordumb on April 16, 2010 at 7:04 pm

First off, congratulations! And it will
be great whatever it is. Second, lol at the ‘Today in Tech’, cuz…yeah

  4. Eric on April 16, 2010 at 7:06 pm

    Congrats, Tom!

  5. Joe Sarsero on April 16, 2010 at 7:08 pm

Congrats. Will you be hosting the morning show that Leo has been talking about? Will you have to move to New York? If so, you’ll need to change the photo on the top of your blog… All the best.

  6. Bruno (Brazil) on April 16, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Hey Tom! I wish you all the best in this new phase of your professional life! I bet it will be a success. I think you’ll drag lots of CNET viewers to catch up with you at TWiT … so, good luck and have fun!

  7. Alex Arena on April 16, 2010 at 7:10 pm

Tom, you are loved wherever you go. Good luck at TWiT. CNET is loosing a “tentpole” as Apple would say.

  8. Marrow on April 16, 2010 at 7:11 pm

Good luck Tom. You are a unique broadcasting talent who should be cast more broadly. Technology in Health would appeal to me and many others. Best of luck to you from a long time silent listener in Melbourne. Getting Mollie over would be a great idea too.

  9. Derek (Bishma) on April 16, 2010 at 7:38 pm

My first response was “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” But then I realized that this is a good thing. I look forward to June 1 and to all the continued goodness from the Brilliant Pants network as well. Cnet won’t be the same with out you but it just leaves room for everything to get better overall.

  10. AngryFrench on April 16, 2010 at 7:47 pm

Congratulations on the new chapter in your life. I just know you will kill it over there, for after all, you are the Stan Musial of podcasting.

  11. Da Man on April 16, 2010 at 8:00 pm

Yesterday Taxes, today Tom Merritt. Now I am really depressed. I may have buy a Microsoft Kin to make my depression complete.

Look on the bright side, Oakland to Petaluma is a beautiful drive every day. Hmmm Cows versus Traffic. I would take the cows.

Stop by for a pint when you pass our farm on Lakeville Hwy. in Petaluma. It looks like TWiT gained another viewer.

    Hey Tom,

Congratulations on the new post in TWIT, best of luck in the future
its hard to imagine BOL without your good self. but CNET’s loss is TWIT’s gain

and may you have all the success that you so richly deserve.

  13. Call Me Jac on April 16, 2010 at 8:06 pm

One of the ideas that have been bouncing around in this hollow space that I call a brain, is a “Call for Help” slash “Tech Guy” slash … photgraphy show where folks can call in, YouTube in, text in questions about DSLR’s, Photomatix, Photoshoshop, GIMP, Camera reviews, tripod reviews, …
But all of that info would of course require ‘guest’ hosts along with you?
There are so many untouched bases in photography for the beginning and intermediate photogs that could use answers from a well informed and succinct host, like you (yup, that was the blowing wind up the skirt part of my request ;-) )
Congrats on the new gig Tom, break a leg!

  14. aethelberga on April 16, 2010 at 8:17 pm

This is great. You will be a wonderful addition to a great network.

  15. Stan Cook hawaiicop on April 16, 2010 at 8:20 pm

This is a great move Tom. I think you will be a good fit with Leo and TWIT. I am surprised but shaking my head YES. Congrats. It is good for you and TWIT.

  16. Ricardo Duarte on April 16, 2010 at 8:37 pm

Mixed fellings… Can Leo get Molly, Tong and Jason too?

  17. Mary Brown on April 16, 2010 at 8:58 pm

Oh, I am so sad! I was so happy to get Molly back with you and now YOU are leaving! Argh! I know it’s good for you, and I certainly wish you well. But BOL will not be the same. You are the smartest and funniest person. It’s going to be difficult not to have you in my daily BOL.
Keep us posted as to when you will have podcasts up for us?

  18. Dave Brodbeck on April 16, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Wow, I am really happy for you Tom. This is really cool. It seems to me that this is a natural. BOL’s loss, but, hopefully they have you on now and then. I look forward to the content you will produce at TWiT. Maybe Marc and I can have you on Futures in Biotech!

  19. Rob Z on April 16, 2010 at 9:02 pm

No offense to the other tech talkers out there, but you are generally much smarter and better informed than most of them. So I would love to see you cover some (but not necessarily all) stories in greater intellectual depth than what we usually get from the likes of, say, Revision3. Twit is a great place where you would be able to do that.

  20. Bill Meeks on April 16, 2010 at 9:06 pm

TWiT needs a comic book show.

  21. Chris Johnson on April 16, 2010 at 9:19 pm

Good luck Tom! I’ll look forward to seeing you on the TWIT network!

  22. Mike Boyd on April 16, 2010 at 9:36 pm

Best of luck to you Tom. I’ll miss you on Buzz out Loud but I’m looking forward to your larger role on the TWiT network.

  23. Michael on April 16, 2010 at 9:46 pm

you will be missed very much from all the cnet stuff you do, but I am sure you will have just as much fun over at the TWIT cottage. Congrats on your move. Leo is very smart bringing you into the fold. Now if he can only get Miss Veronica to come over, he will be totally unstoppable.

  24. Steve on April 16, 2010 at 9:46 pm

Great news. I’ve been waiting for this to happen but didn’t think it would be soon. Now we know why Leo put off his East Coast studio and show… he had to come up with the loot to hire you away. That’s only partly a joke I think. :-)

  25. Jason on April 16, 2010 at 10:01 pm

Thanks, Tom for ruining my weekend. I will certainly miss you, but I know you are doing the right thing. Many blessings!

  26. Haggus on April 16, 2010 at 10:10 pm

TWiT and Tom….it should make for a great fit!

  27. Tommy Russo on April 16, 2010 at 10:14 pm

Hey Tom, Congrats again. Change is good. You’ll be making a great network better. Imua!

  28. Tim on April 16, 2010 at 10:15 pm

Well, that certainly explains all the Top-5 Lame Prizes. It was a way to slowly clean out your office. Congrats Tom!

  29. NicoleSpag on April 16, 2010 at 10:23 pm

What can I say, but I’M SO EXCITED & HAPPY FOR YOU!!!!! Hmm maybe you could create a video game show with a certain blond girl you raid with in WoW? ;) lol seriously though I’m really excited to see all the cool stuff you’ll come up with at TWiT! I have no doubt it will be awesome. Congrats!

  30. Joshua Manor on April 16, 2010 at 10:27 pm

I can’t wait. I would love to see you do a daily AM tech show. More NPR than Zoo please. 20 min of news 15 min reocuring feature than repete news. 5 min of ads per hour.

  31. Tom Kee on April 16, 2010 at 10:31 pm

I’m bummed, never saw this coming. Cnet won’t be the same. I guess I will have to check this twit thing out. Best of luck (you won’t need it).

  32. Joshua S. Hill on April 16, 2010 at 10:50 pm

    Congratulations!

Really hope that you’ll stay on with BOL as well as TWiT! BOL just won’t be the same without you if you go!

  33. gildorluthien on April 16, 2010 at 10:53 pm

Tom you were the first voice I heard on my first CNET podcast and your consistency kept me there. I appreciate the quality you have always tried to show forth in your work. Buzz Out Loud became my reason for podcasting. And thanks for taking my call on Real Deal that day I called to ask about USB adapters for IDE Hard Drive, and then leaving me on the phone line so I could listen to the show for a bit, since streaming is blocked for me at work. That spoke volumes to me about what kind of person you are. I am confident that you will have continued success in the future!

  34. Pete_NYC on April 16, 2010 at 11:56 pm

This just made me go download the TWiT app for iPad and I done even have my iPad yet (3G). I think this is great news. best of luck!!

  35. Bryan on April 16, 2010 at 11:58 pm

are you doing this because Molly returned her iPad?

  36. Henry on April 17, 2010 at 12:13 am

    Congratulations Tom!!!

Gonna miss you on BOL!! I feel like you are the “anchor” for that show! :-)

But I believe you will be a GREAT addition to TWIT!! Wake them up a bit!! ;-)

    Looking forward to it!

    Best regards,
    Henry

  37. Karl Robstad on April 17, 2010 at 12:13 am

    WOW. Congratulations, Tom!!!

Guess I’ll be starting to watch TWiT come May! haha.

Almost can’t imagine BOL without your regular even keel.

Well, sir, congratulations, again. You are the man.

    -Dr. Karl :)

  38. Ben on April 17, 2010 at 12:26 am

I shall follow you sir!! You’re definitely one of my all time favorite hosts so I’m glad to hear we’ll still have plenty from you to listen too. Congrats on the bold move!

  39. victor on April 17, 2010 at 1:53 am

NOOO! don’t leave BOL team! please!

  40. Sean (BraveJhawk) on April 17, 2010 at 3:36 am

You’ll be greatly missed on BOL. I have been listening to it ever since I first heard Leo mention it on twit. I guess I’ll listen to twit more religiously at least until I find out what netcasts you’ll be taking part in.

There are four American organizations trying to take over the world: Microsoft, Google, Apple, and Leo/TWiT Network.

  41. DeadCow on April 17, 2010 at 3:37 am

Congrats. What’s gonna happen to BOL now?

  42. Cal on April 17, 2010 at 4:49 am

wow i thought i was late to an april fool’s joke. BoL won’t be the same. and twit cottage gonna be crowded

  43. Marsh Burchell on April 17, 2010 at 4:57 am

Congratulations! and good luck with TWIT!

  44. Emely on April 17, 2010 at 5:15 am

Congrats Tom. Please stay on as daily host of BOL. It won’t be the same without you. How about a weekly show talking about TV, but not with Eileen, no offense. Molly, as co-host? I always enjoyed when the conversation turned to TV on BOL.

  45. Corrine Pearce on April 17, 2010 at 5:24 am

This is very sad. Only you and Molly had the right chemistry for BOL and just when she gets back, YOU leave. I was trying to think of someone who might help take some of the hosting load off LEO but couldn’t think of anyone….EXCEPT YOU. You will be AWESOME!! You will need some writers for your segues. Thats alot of airtime to fill with segues.

  46. TKO on April 17, 2010 at 6:13 am

Wow! Congratulations Tom! That is totally awesome! {/molly-voice} ..Be sure to do anything you can that involves you and Molly behind the microphone – the chemistry you two have makes BOL so so cool! …Also, how about delving into something that’s historical/monarchical/feudal/language-ical? (okay, I made that last one up.) :) You have Forecast and CurrentGeek, both of which are entirely awesome, but those times when you go into those other parts of your knowledge-base that have nothing to do with tech and, say, more to do with the historical interests that an intense Warcraft/RPG person might like .. those really really interest me. (Even though I do totally avoid Warcraft .. I know I’d love it, but I just don’t have the time for it.)

  47. Aaron on April 17, 2010 at 6:19 am

Glad to see Tom Is joining the TWIT team! CNET & TWIT podcasts are the best

  48. Alan Burchill on April 17, 2010 at 8:44 am

    This is so AWESOME!!!

  49. Mike on April 17, 2010 at 9:31 am

Tom – Congratulations and best of luck. I, like many others, will certainly miss the foundation you give BOL. Your shoes, and segues for that matter, will be impossible to completely fill! I wish you all the success on TWiT! Way to go!

  50. Chandra on April 17, 2010 at 10:10 am

I have to agree with what some other people have said – this is a bittersweet announement. I am beyond thrilled that you will get these new opportunities. You are a great journalist and an amazing entertainer and wherever you feel that you can best make use of your talent is the right place to be. Of course, as a huge CNET fan, a can’t help but be a little sad and scared at this change. You know us nerds, we fear change – unless it’s with our gadgets.

As far as ideas, all I can recommend is that you find somebody to co-host with that you have great chemistry with. A good one-man-show is good, but nothing solo can match the magic you get when two (or more) great entertainers get togther and feed off each other in a positive way, much like I felt you did with Molly.

Best of luck, I’m excited to hear what you come up with
